La Bilbao Refugio

#BilbaoRefugio

EVERY STEP YOU TAKE HELPS THEM TO START AGAIN

The BILBAO REFUGIO (BILBAO REFUGE) is a solidarity race that has a triple objective: to raise citizen awareness and give visibility to the situation of refugees; strengthen citizens commitment to the right of asylum; and obtain resources for CEAR-Euskadi´s projects.

CEAR-Euskadi

CEAR EUSKADI is an organisation present in Bizkaia, Araba and Gipuzkoa. For more than 30 years, we have been defending and promoting the rights and comprehensive development of refugees, stateless persons and migrants who come to the Basque Country fleeing situations of persecution.

Bilbao refugio

This race was born in 2014 thanks to the challenge of Óscar Pasarín, a Basque ultra-distance runner. Óscar wished to give visibility to the hard journey that refugees have to go through in order to find a safe place. He did it through his greatest passion: running. That year he ran 591 km in a period of 10 days, through the mountains of the Basque Country, finishing with a citizen march in Bilbao.

In 2015, he crossed the peninsula, running 1,200 km from Algeciras to Bilbao, and in 2016, he ran the Camino de Santiago, from Donibane Garazi to Santiago de Compostela.

In 2017, Óscar ran 1,000 km in 7 days around the estuary and during the last 5 km, more than 600 people accompanied him to cross the finish line. Today, Óscar´s challenge has become the challenge of citizenry, through the Bilbao Refugio (Bilbao Refuge) solidarity race.

The health crisis has not prevented us from continuing to work, nor will it prevent us from running for refuge this year. And we will do it VIRTUALLY between 10 July and 9 August from anywhere in the world.
